LONGSHORE DRIFTERS

A rare thing in modern Country but a staple of the genre’s classic era, the duet partnership of songwriters Michelle Miller & Mark J. Lee forms the bedrock of The Longshore Drifters sound. From the delicate, heartworn harmonies of songs like ‘Hurricanes & Razor Wire’ to the back and forth of Disco Country melodrama, ‘Five Damn Minutes’ the pair bring a synergy reminiscent of Dolly & Porter, Loretta & Conway and Gram & Emmylou. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the album’s only cover song, a revved-up duet version of Tom Paxton’s ‘The Last Thing on my Mind’.

Lee & Miller, who also co-produced the album, bring a sense of exploration and playfulness to classic Country tropes, fearlessly painting outside of the lines, entwining cinematic and psychedelic elements around time-honoured Country songwriting. Obsessive and eclectic in their pursuit of hidden gems from across the Country music spectrum, the album features copious amounts of pedal steel, layered 'Nashville sound'-esque backing vocals, ​bass effects lifted from a 70's Johnny Paycheck record and even a homage to Grady Martin's infamous baritone fuzz guitar accident. Far from a 'by the numbers homage', the Longshore Drifters deploy these sonic treasures with great care and ingenuity to tell a story that is very much their own.
